If you are thinking about pursuing a career in accounting, it is important to remember that there is a wide range of accounting careers that an individual can pursue and that each of these careers will require an individual to perform different tasks. In fact, people with accounting degrees can pursue so many different careers and perform so many different tasks that it is often difficult for a person to determine whether a particular career will allow him or her to perform the specific kind of work that is desired. Therefore, an individual with an accounting degree must find a way to separate the tasks associated with one career from the tasks associated with another in order to ensure that he or she is actually pursuing the career and/or specialty of choice. Fortunately, differentiating between accounting careers is typically easier than it might seem because there are existing categories into which accounting careers are typically separated. It is important to note, however, that there are a few things about these categories that an individual should remember.

  1. First, it is important to remember that a career may fit into more than one category. This is important because there are some careers that may require an individual to perform tasks that are very similar to the tasks involved in other accounting careers, and some employers, as a result, may combine the responsibilities of two careers into one position. In other words, an individual may be considered a financial accountant even though he or she performs both the tasks that a financial accountant and the tasks that a managerial accountant would typically perform. There is, therefore, some overlap between each of the fields, and a specific career is not necessarily exclusive to a specific category.
  2. Secondly, it is important to remember that each category will require an individual to have different skills, but the skills that each category requires are typically related to the skills used in other accounting fields. This means that you will not be locked into a specific accounting field simply because you chose that field; rather, you may be able to use some of the skills that you acquired in one accounting field to obtain a position in another field.
