Finding an accounting job is never easy. Many individuals consider the entire job search process to be frustrating, time-consuming, and, in some cases, expensive. Unfortunately, this is true even in the accounting field because there are also a lot of people with accounting degrees competing for jobs. It can, as a result, be difficult for an individual to find a position in the accounting field in some cases and even more difficult for an individual to find the specific type of position that he or she desires in the accounting field. It may be easier for an individual to find a job in the accounting field if he or she knows precisely what to look for and where to look.

  • First, if you are looking at a job ad, look at the qualifications and requirements for the job before you look at anything else. This is important because every position has different requirements, and there is no reason to pursue a job that you are not qualified for. You may be able to save a great deal of time and effort by checking the qualifications that a position requires first and then skipping to the next job listing if you do not qualify for that position. In other words, it may be interesting to know that a managerial accountant makes X number of dollars in a certain company, but that information will not actually help you if you do not have the education, experience, and/or certifications that you need to obtain a managerial accounting position.
  • Secondly, try to focus on the education, skills, and experience that you do have rather than the things that you do not have. Some positions that will require an advanced accounting degree and/or a series of accounting certificates and licenses, but many positions require only a bachelor's degree and a single certificate or license. Often this is enough for an individual to take a position that is similar to a desired position if he or she is not qualified for the original position. If you find a position that looks interesting, but you are not qualified to take it, try to look for an entry-level position in the same field that you are qualified for. This will allow you to use your existing qualifications to enter the field that you want and gain experience to earn the certificates and licenses that more advanced positions require.
  • Third, there are a number of different which in which an individual can look for an accounting job, but it is important to remember that some places are better than others. The best place to start a job search, in most cases, is in your school's career office because a career office is designed specifically to help a student find and/or obtain a position. The human resources office of the company that you interned for, professional accounting associations, the websites of major accounting firms such as Deloitte or Grant Thornton, and job search websites are also excellent places to look for positions in the field of accounting.
